Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
